Just in time for a winter wonderland, the Johnston Street alley in Decatur is officially complete! That means residents and visitors alike can now enjoy the art-centric alley and revitalized outdoor space this season and beyond.
About the Johnston Street Alley in Decatur
In case you haven’t heard, the Johnston Street alley in Decatur is now an inspiring space designed to attract visitors to the area. A few of the project improvements include new stairs and a slide, a performance area, cobbled stone and landscaping.
Another one of the main attractions to the Johnston Street alley, renamed “Sonny Side,” is the massive, colorful mural managed by the Alabama Center for the Arts. The vibrant mural depicts symbols of Decatur, such as cranes painted to remind you of a sunset and a series of three-dimensional hot air balloons.
The mural covers the exterior wall of the Carriage House. What’s more, as part of the project, the women’s clothing boutique now has a private staircase entrance.
More about the project
According to reports, city officials hope the Johnston Street alley in Decatur is just the beginning of redevelopment in the downtown area. Future upgrades to the area, for example, could include extending the alley between ACA dorms and buildings on Second Avenue. Just north of Johnston Street, the space could be transformed into a walkable corridor.
Besides the beautiful mural painted by Britt Flood, a variety of local businesses and citizens sponsored additional artistic touches, affectionately called “The Alley Cats.” Be sure to keep an eye out for these whimsical creations, designed by Kimberly Parker and made by Riverside Designs.
